Expansion on tap at Fayetteville craft brewery

A timber-intensive, casually appointed taproom is under construction and nearing completion to add more space, atmosphere and flavorful consumption opportunities at Bridge Brew Works craft brewery in Fayetteville.

Ken Linch and Nathan Herrold founded Bridge Brew Works in 2010, to share their mutual affinity for quality, craft-brewed beer -- and practice their more than 30 years of combined brewing skills -- with the throngs of travelers to Fayette County -- bikers, hikers, rafters, rappellers, et al -- and locals alike. Nathan's brother, Adam, rounds out the professional brewing crew at the establishment.

During its early years, the new enterprise was a brewery exclusively, with no sit-down service available -- but that's changing apace.

"We started brewing in January 2010, after a couple of years of planning and building before that," Linch explained. "We started selling to local restaurants and bars. Then, over a few years, we expanded through distributors statewide.

"When we first opened, for first six years or so, we were not allowed to have the public on site. We were strictly a production brewery. We transitioned for a couple of years and added on a tasting room, but with a tasting room, we could only sell beer to go, either in bottles or growlers.

"This is the next logical step," Linch said of the taproom. "It will allow us to build out so that we can change our licensing and sell by the drink and the glass on site. We're shooting to have it ready by mid-May."

The approximately 1,000-square-foot seating area "will essentially be a covered porch with a timber frame. It'll be really casual," he said.

Because Bridge Brew Works stands outside the city limits and may not meet city requirements for operating a full-service restaurant as such, various comestibles may be available from a food truck once the taproom is up and serving.

Linch foresees more distant clientele passing through the Bridge Brew Works taproom during their outdoor excursions.

"It'll be another year or year-and-a-half or so -- they're talking about 2019, about having a biking trail in Fayette County. Plans are for people to eventually be able to bike from Charleston to Fayetteville all the way over to Snowshoe.

"We get a lot of out-of-state visitors. We finally got an attractions sign on Route 119. In the beginning, we had to shoo away people from out of state who'd come here for outdoor activities -- whitewater rafting, rock climbing -- and we're kind of in the mood to get the word out that they can come to the brewery now and actually be able to sit down and have a beer," Linch said.
